The other problem is I wouldnt want the "winner" getting something he doesnt need \ want, so I think with hindsight, as noone is expressing a strong preference I would allow the winner to choose from the prizes available, then second etc etc

One option we use when we are in even number is that.
One player (usually from the organizing club) misses the first game and gets a forfait of half the points of a total win (eg 4050 with the new system).
In the second and third games it will be two other players to miss the game and they are taken from the bottom of the ranks. Still they get the same points.
After the competition is done, the forfait points are converted into their average score (got in the 2 other games) but this result cannot be lower than the forfait value.
This is somewhat arbitrary,but in Italy we sometimes use it as it allows all players to have fun.
