Donington Derby - UK 25 mm 400 point Open - Sat 1 October 2016
Dear All
Starting this as the official thread for the Sat 1 October 2016 competition.
The organizers are Derby Wargames Associates and fees are payable directly in advance as per the website details. Please book (and pay) as early as you can as space is limited and is given out on a first come first served basis for each competition. The fee is £15 for the Saturday – if you are planning to attend the show on Saturday and Sunday and also want to play a couple of individual challenge games on the Sunday can you please pay £20 (this is the standard fee for a 2 day competition).
The website details: http://www.worldwargames.co.uk/
Provisional Timetable - Saturday 1 October 2016
Arrival, “grab a coffee”, and first round draw - 9.00- 9.30
1st game 9.30-11.30 – then lunch – longer lunch if you lose or win quickly!
2nd game 12.30-14.30
3rd game 14.45-16.45 – then prizes!
Armies & Army list
Armies drawn from the Impetus rule book, any published Extra Impetus supplement or from any of the official beta lists on the Impetus website (where army lists have been amended please use the latest version). All army lists are made available to all players a week before the event by players posting their list here
Draw
The first round will be randomly drawn on the day, however, I will try to make sure regular club opponents will not be drawn against each other. The second and third round will be based on combined points scored from earlier games. Again, where practicable, and within close points boundaries, we will aim to avoid regular opponent match up’s. In case of odd numbers on the day (never seen this happen yet) we will draw for a bye in the 1st round and then have lowest points scored.
Confirmed Competitors Playing
Will amend the list below as I get details from the organizers as to who has paid.
1. Jez Todd
2. Matt Todd
3. Ken (Cyrus the Adequate)
4. Paul Davison (Eddie Longshanks)
5. Tony Dennis (Aurelius)
6. John Ryan
7. Paul Harrison
8. Shaun Rimmer
9.
10. Last call for entries??
Cheers Jez

Amending as we speak ... historically not sure who I should resemble. Last Sheffield competition I did survive in two games with a draws being just one VD point away from breaking. Perhaps Pyrrhus is best for me??
For everyone anymore entrants coming in? Just to warn everyone again you do have to pay the organisers first before am adding to the players list. Also I know across all the competitions running it will be first come first served and I have been told that the SAGA competition is proving very popular. So to avoid disappointment I would definitely recommend entering and paying early !

Hi I would definitely recommend to come along - I did exactly the same about 5 years ago with my brother and we had only played a few games of Impetus before against each other.
The real fun is you play different armies you have not seen before. Also you do get a chance to look around the show so its a good day out.
What army/armies do you have? Where would you come from - I am based near Coventry.
Cheers Jez

Sounds good! The Show webpage has the competition details and once you have paid the organisers will let me know and I will add to the list of players. Please highlight to anyone else interested in your area - always good to get new players at the competitions.

Great you can come ! Will post you up on the players list after the organisers have confirmed but don't worry if I am a little slow as off on holiday for a few weeks shortly.
For all - Yes playing all the latest amendments.
Still room for players and just to issue the warning again it is first come first served on entries and the organisers have warned that places are going fast especially on some of the larger SAGA competitions.
Cheers Jez

Jez / All,
When I paid I paid the £20 option referred to in the first post to do individual games on Sunday as a possibility. Derby has come back and said I am the only one to do that. Just checking that is still an option. If so I am happy to leave in case any of the other 20 or so players still to sign up want to play. Just checking.

John - thanks sorry for the late reply. Added you to the list so we have 6 players who have paid. So far you are the only one for the Sunday as well though .... guess you could wait and see if others come through?
Will Colin and Jan (I think) come up from Herts area?

Shaun -
Great the organizers will send me an email and will stick your names up on the list after. This thread will start getting interesting shortly as we will start putting up our lists for the competition day. We can aim for getting the army details posted up for Monday 26th Sept so the week before.
We will likely get a few more late entries - WARNING though to others reading it is starting to get risky as tables may get full up from other competitions running, so please get the entries in.
Also for everyone - local intelligence update on armies playing. My painting on new late Samurai has slowed down so I know they will not be ready. Likely to play French 1515 renaissance - my brother is likely to use his Medieval Russians or that could be a bluff.
Cheers Jez

Re: Donington Derby - UK 25 mm 400 point Open - Sat 1 October 2016
Hi Shaun and Paul added to players list so up to 8.
Shaun - Re the Parthian army for me this is OK as it is an Impetus booklet. I don't have access to this BUT the whole point of players posting the army list on the forum area here is that it is self checked by all players.
Anyone please shout if you disagree??
Personally think posting the armies starts to add interest in the build up to the day - it is a good system and saves the responsibility and onus on the nominated "organiser" to have to check everything.
Hmmm wondering if I should switch to ancients. Still we went through this before and it is deliberately an OPEN contest so will probably stick with Renaissance. Leads to some pretty unusual match up's though!
Cheers Jez

Re: Donington Derby - UK 25 mm 400 point Open - Sat 1 October 2016
Hi All
Looks like there will be the 8 of us for the competition! Looking forward to this ..... the next step from everyone is to post up your 400 point army details here on the forum. Can I set a deadline for this as Sunday 25 September lunchtime 1.00 pm.
As an update from me I am playing a practice game against my brother on next Saturday so will probably post my army at the last minute. Now trying to finish painting a few Venetian archers so will probably go with Venetian or Italian coalition from the Book 1 army lists.
Other new intelligence Matt is now looking at Carthaginian - as he is also finishing some rebased Gauls. Tony I think is still looking at Wars of the Roses?
Cheers Jez

Re: Donington Derby - UK 25 mm 400 point Open - Sat 1 October 2016
As for armies I am torn. The plan to bring Thracians has ran into soft sand as painting has not happened. That leaves me with Persians, Ancient Brits, Yorkists, Scythians or cough Hussites.
Derby is a bit of a strange competition. The open format tends to favour punchy armies that can do the business quickly. That rules out everyone but ABs but I'm not feeling the love for them. Persians are where I feel most at home but their remarkable mediocrity does mean they're not that exciting. Skythians can win but not big, Hussites can win but only if your opponent doesnt have gunpowder or pikes, and if they refuse to commit you may as well pack up and agree a draw. Basically I have a fair choice but none of them are really "competetive" - hard to beat - sometimes, fun - mostly (not Yorkists) but not competition winners.

Ken great if you can check with Mark and Chris as they will need to get the entry into the organizers ... obviously only makes sense if they can both go to keep even numbers of players.
Re the army choice I tend to go with something I have not played with for a while as it ends up being 3 games in a row on the day. Just played a few games with French Francis 1 1515 type armies and hence fancy a change from the Swiss pike blocks - also the push to finish off a unit of new figures is always good.
I always think you can have a great army list but if you roll a six at the wrong time in the cohesion test it all ends up badly .............
Cheers Jez
