Using Impetus for TYW
I know that Lorenzo is planning to publish Baroque in the near future but I have been thinking lately about how Impetus could be modified to include Thirty Years War armies. My inspiration has been reading about a new set of rules called Tercio by a couple of gamers from Spain. Tercio certainly shows influence from Impetus. What I like about Tercio is that they keep the same frontage as Impetus (12cm for 28mm.) The more I read the more I have become convinced that TYW is really an extension of warfare the shows much in common with the tactics and practices of the later Italian Wars. Impetus should be able to handle this. I've been toying with the idea of integrated one stand units of pike and shot.
I'd be interested if anyone has done some tinkering of Impetus with respect to late 16th and early 17th century armies.

Modifying the Large Unit rule to cover the Tercio and Group move and fire is about all that's needed to get a playable game.
Others may want more flavour, bu tthat should give you the ability to make a Tercio work as well as the later linear firepower that ultimately led to their decline in the TYW.

Making Baroque I realized how things had to be changed. Well many things changed for Baroque will work also for Impetus 2 (the reactions), but the tactics of this later period is a bit different and some specific adjustment has been required. But yes, most of the philosophy is the same. Probably Baroque will fit cery easily to the next period (the XVIII Cent.)

Re: Using Impetus for TYW
I have played French Wars of Religion using Impetus and just had to make some rules to cover the large Reiter pistol shooting cavalry. In this game still had the Pike as FP units and the shot as T shooters.

Baroque is going to be good.
In fact I think that it might feed back into Impetus 2

Re: Using Impetus for TYW
Hey Jim I agree. But from what I know about Baroque the level of the unit in Baroque is the brigade and not the regiment. So Baroque functions at one level higher than Impetus. Personally I think Impetus, as it stands, operates at a scale that works very well for TYW and ECW (one unit equals about 500 infantrymen.)

Quiet a few new troop types to be added to play TYW but yes I get your drift Gaius battlefields are not that far removed from each other. Played a few TYW games that felt very much like an ancients fight

Actually Baroque and Impetus have the same (non)scale. It is because in a standard game you can field 4-5 foot "Units"

But why the shift to 18cm frontage for infantry units?

mostly for basing compatibilities. But Baroque they are just suggested base, as you can use any basing (if both armies are based the same)

Also because movement is based on BU, you can tweak the speed of movement to match the base sizes
