Forming Large Units with anything?

I was reading inside the cover of Extra Impetus 4 and it says any units of the same type can form large units, even if they don't show a 2nd rank reduction on the lists. So does that mean if I take 2 units of Sumerian FP Guards (beta lists) I can form a large unit with them  after paying the full cost for both?  It would be nice if I could     Its funny what you find when you actually read the rules and supplements properly isn't it?

I guess you mean the box "How to use the Lists" on page 2 of each Extra Impetus? I've always taken this to refer to those options when a discount is listed. If you take the discount then the large unit is compulsory, if you pay full points then you can form up either way.

There was a suggestion, it was in previous years tournament rules as an option (but has been dropped this year), that any troops could form ad hoc large units, (may have been limited to the "heavies"). There was a limit to the number of ad hoc units you could form, and an increased cost in VD if they were lost. I never had the chance to try out the rule, but it looked interesting. I wonder if it might appear in Impetvs 2?

large units can formed when stated by the lists. Anyway if you see some reduced costs they can be formed.

In Impetus 2 there will be not the run to Large Units. Groups in line will have their advantages and Large Units will be less powerful as a consequence
