Large Units
Hi, a group of us have just started playing Impetus over here in Perth - enjoying it very much so far.
Just seeking some clarification on the formation of large units;
Obviously they are allowed if you have the option to purchase a cheaper rear rank unit or explicitly mentioned by the lists.
But can you always form them if you purchase your units at the regular price?
I thought that page 2 of the extra Impetus books suggests this in the How to Use the Lists section.
But in another thread Lorenzo stated "Large units can formed when stated by the lists."
So can they always be formed, at regular price, or not?
regards Andrew

Re: Large Units
Welcome aboard.
If I have understood your question correctly...
Only those troop types listed or noted as being able to form large units can do so. Some have a discount for the second / third rank. If paid for at the discounted rate then they can only deploy as part of a large unit. If paid for at the full rate then they can deploy either way. The decision must be made at deployment time. There are some lists that large units are compulsory.

Re: Large Units
Cheers.
I think you have answered it.
I can't just have, for example, my Sarmatian CP Lancers from the Later Sarmatian list combined into large units as it is not mentioned as a possibility in the lists.

Re: Large Units
Correct, only if specifically listed as an option.
Lorenzo did "float" an idea a couple of years ago, in the 2012 Tournament optional rules I think, that would have allowed other units to "go large", but the idea was dropped. It will be interesting to see if the idea appears in any form with the publication of Impetus 2.

Re: Large Units
Aurelius is right, including the brief flirtation with something different at the start of 2012.
This also came up a bit back on this forum and Lorenzo confirmed that only the troops identified in the lists can form large units

Lorenzo also implied that there won't be more Large Units in Impetus 2

Re: Large Units
Do you mean that there will be no large units at all? For what reason? It works well and that's one of the things I like in the rules. Works like it did in real life and reflects the tactics of the time, feeding troops in from the rear.

Re: Large Units
Sorry - I didn't phrase that clearly. Lorenzo said that Impetus 2 will not change the army lists and points values.
So that implies there won't be any change in the troops which can form large units. If they can form large units now, they'll be able to form large units in Impetus 2 and if they can't now they won't in Impetus 2. I agree that large units (when appropriate) are a good feature. However, letting any troops form large units would really change the game. If progressive loss of impetus dice comes with Impetus 2, that will be a big enough change.

Re: Large Units
Thanks, that clears it up. Although I can't really see progressive loss of Impetus making a big difference.

Muahahahahahahahahaha!
No more husbanding of those VBU 7 or 8 Impetus 5 Heavy cavalry, they will be given free reign to roam and kill given they won't be losing all those 5 dice of Impetus to a lucky skirmisher shot...

Re: Large Units
also for Large Units it makes a difference as they can use full impetus also with some losses.
Large Units will remains good in I2, but not so good.
In general I2 will give more advantage to groups in line. This will be good for D=B troops, as D=C will have more difficulties to stay in line.

Re: Large Units
I like the sound of it.
If we can get as many rules tested via Advanced Rules prior to formal inclusion that would be the best playtesting ever.

Re: Large Units
I have never really had to deal with Large Units the size units that you're talking about. So maybe the progressive loss of Impetus would make a difference.
Is there a set of trial or advanced rules or amendments that need playtesting? If so where do I find them?
