Hi

Im thinking of starting impetus, gaming at first the punic wars.

Is it correct that I will need the impetus rules and extra impetus 4?

You only need the main rulebook plus the free download of amendments to get started. EI4 if you want to follow army lists for your games.

in the rules you can find basic list for Romans and Carthaginias. Extra 4 will give more details on lists, but not necessary to start.

Except that the lists for the Punic Wars in the rules and in EI4 are different enough that I think it would be best to get EI4. As an aside, with many EI1-5 out are the lists in the rules now no longer valid?

lists in the rules are always "valid". Of course they are basic lists. But the concept of "valid" is mostly related to the tournaments.
