Zone of control

Still solo playing this game to understand the rules before taking it to the club and introduce to other folk. But a couple of queries

On page 22 in the rule book it talks about Zone Of Control

So lets say I have two enemy archer units in my zone of control and the first unit fires at me. I therefore fire back. The second enemy unit fires at me, can I then with that same unit fire again?

On page 39 7.6.2 it says "Apart from Routed units S, CL. and ART Units, other Routed UnitsDisorder and cause 1 permanent loss to units behind them that are even partially within 5U of the projection of their rear"

Now i'm just stuck on this word "Routed" and i'm guessing we actually mean retreating fter being beaten in combat but not destroyed.

It may be me but I always think of routed in terms of leaving the battlefield after being destroyed
