Adding Up Pilum Dice

We had an interesting discussion of the Pilum rule. Imagine a melee with two fresh Roman legion units as defenders (on main and one support). Are the dice added together for one roll (3+1) or does the player roll them separately (ie. 3 dice and then 1 die or perhaps in reverse.) There are certain advantages to both. How do others do it?

separately, like other shooting though pilum is not like other shooting for many other aspects
