We had a situation in a recent game where a legionary charged into an existing melee.

Can they use the pilum?
We allowed that as pilum is part of melee but not of shooting. But it looked awkward anyway.

Good question. I can't remember seeing this but I think we would do it the way you did because pilum is a melee weapon and not missile fire. The Legion unit would only get to throw a pilum if it became the main unit in the melee. Is that what happened?
