Is Short Bow B too bad? with improvement suggestion
Hello everyone, first time posting here.
TLDR: I think Short Bow B is badly balanced, and suggest it should have the same stats as a Sling. Explanation below.
I've always felt Short Bow B (with skirmishers in mind) was particularly rubbish.
I very regularly fire my VBU 2 slingers and javelins with 2 or 3 dice, but whenever i use a VBU 2 Bow, he ALWAYS fires 1 dice, in nearly every scenario.
I very much like the change from Impetus 1 to 2, where each skirmisher weapon had a 1 point cost difference depending on if it was mildly better, especially in regards to Slings. I feel Slings are the best of the 3 common weapons (Javelin/Sling/Short Bow B), but they also marginally cost the most. I think that's a great idea.
However i think the cost of the Bow is too much, for how poor is it.
Damage dice (shooting table), and costs below (baseline = VBU 2 Skirmishers).
Sling (0/1)==(-1/0) Cost= 12
Short Bow B (-1/0)==(-3/-2) Cost= 11
Javelin (0/1)==(NO) Cost = 10
Moving ahead with my assertion that Short Bow B is too weak, I'd suggest that the cost of Short Bow B should stay the same, but the damage should be equal to a Sling. (I'll admit i've never tested this in a game yet). I think this would perfectly balance the weapon.
This is my thinking.
The reason you'd buy a 1-point-more-expensive Sling would be to gain the benefit of the '-1 against an opponents cohesion test at short range' (arguably more important than damage dice, worth a higher cost).
The reason you'd buy a 1-point-less-expensive Javelin, is that you lose the Long Range option (very consequential, worthy of lowering cost), but you'd gain the 'Move one action without firing penalty' (a worthwhile trade-off).
For very poor quality archers, i may even suggest implementing a Short Bow C, with the current stats.

Sling was much more powerful than the common bow.
Apart from this in Impetus 2 even worse shooters can create problems as 1 die is about always rolled (and 1 is what you roll in many cases)

One thing I like about Impetus 2 is that the sling is more powerful than the common bow. There is historical evidence for that, and I can't recall any other rules sets that recognize that.
