New to ancients, armies?
Hello,
I just ordered a copy of the rules after reading some reviews and the Basic Impetus file. It seems like the rules can be a lot of fun.
I also ordered the Extra #5 supplement since it had some feudal lists and other superficial interests to me (Teutonic knights look great). However, I could also use the basic lists in the rule book as well since I really have no preferences.
I want to game historical opponents just for the sake of immersion and fun. Also, balanced game is a requirement (if there are any imbalanced armies). What would be the best match-up for a starting ancients/medieval gamer (preferably from the Extra #5 supplement)?

Re: New to ancients, armies?
The volumes in each Extra Impetus are organised by conflict rather than just straight time delineated periods and there is a writeup of the events covered.
For instance, if you like Teutons then starting on p27 you get a summarised rundown of the history of "The Crusades in the North" which gives you historical matchups to choose from.
As for balance, Impetus has a consistent points cost for units of given statistics. It isn't perfect but it does tend to promote good equivalence battles, you choose your army and you take your chances (eg if you take Teutons and go all Heavy Horse you will struggle if someone has chosen a Pike Heavy army).
Hope you have fun with it, it is a most enjoyable game.
