Chinese question Empty Chinese question

Post by Geoffrm Sat May 30, 2015 3:53 pm

Hi,
I have noticed that the Chinese on the Beta list have a reduction for T if they are in a large group with FL but in the extra impetus 5 there is no such reduction. Does this mean that you buy as separate units but only join them up if you feel you need?

Also it says if 1 FL forms a large group they all must. Does this mean that I have to buy equal numbers of FL & T or can I buy more T than FL and use the extra T as independent units?

hi

yup right on both questions. the no reduction means you can form large units on game by game basis (if you played in 3 game tournament) or i suppose at deployment in friendlies.

if one FL forms a large unit then all must...but you can buy as many T as you can afford

Funny because I read the notes a bit differently. If one FL and T form a large unit then all FL and T must form large units. Notice that in all the Chinese lists the number of FL and T are the same. That means there wouldn't be leftover T running about.

The usual "rule" is that if you pay full price for the back rank in a list this allows you the flexibility to choose to form as a large unit or not.

Not sure on the uneven numbers bit - I can see Frazers point, but I think on balance I would agree w GC and use the reverse logic F gives - what would happen if you bought more FL than T and then tried to form LUs?

The crux of the matter I think is to look at what the list is trying to represent. I'm no expert (on anything) and there are fewer subjects that hold less interest to me than ancient Chinese, but I'm guessing there is a period within the wider scope of the list where the infantry fought in mixed units and one when they did not. I don't see from a historical perspective there being a period where both options are around simultaneously - armies are bureaucracies and they don't like that sort of thing. I think therefore it is perfectly ok to choose beforehand to form LUs or not as Fraser says, but you have to have the mix to allow it.

full cost in Large Unit allows you to form or not Large Units when this "deployent" is optional. That you can deploy wider or deeper.
The reduced cost has been introduced to help those armies forced to form Large Units or to push the player to form LU.

In the case of Chinese if there is in the notes that you MUST for LU, then you must. In that case you can choose between 2 ways to represent these mixed troops so you cannot change from a game to another within the same competition (it is an army list choice)

Thanks Lorenzo - how do you deal with an army that doesnt have enough to do this ie 3 FL & 4T for example, or 5 FL and 4 T???
