Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
I have just completed D&P 60 and I'm finishing with Baroque. BI 2 is the next priority. Many lists have been done, but still there are some to complete and then the new layout with some examples to be added etc.
I will do my best to have it ready by February/March as pdf.

Some questions...
Great to know, Lorenzo!
So far, you've announced to include S and CL evasion, as well as a better compendium of army lists. I have some more questions:
- Will the lists name what kind of troops represents each and every unit (example: peasants, mercenaries, nobles...)?
- Will a 180Āŗ turn be included as a possible movement?
- Will you add a bonus (like +2d6) for flank/rear charges?
- Could you PLEASE tell us something more about the new contents?
Thanks in advance. If you fell comfortable about it, I'll translate your answers into Spanish and publish them in the La Armada wargaming forum.
Thank you very much again and congratulations on your great work!

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
I was sure to have answered to these questions this morning, now they are gone. I do it again.
1) yes troops names included
2) yes
3) A bonus yes, probably 2d6, still to decide.
4) There will be initiative re-roll. Every army has the option to buy few in the options (eg, chage 1 S with 2 initiative re-rolls). So you can invest more on leadership and less on troops.
Other changes will affect a little the firing table and I'm considering new rules for terrains. 120x90cm will be the suggested table size for 15mm.

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
Certainly we need some new terrain placement rules - at present we often end up with four pieces littering the battlefield - something that very rarely occurred in real life. Ā Most battles took place on open terrain with terrain on the edges, flank or rear.
Perhaps also consideration could be given to sequential placement of troops. Ā In our longrunning Ancient campaign the arrival of elephants has finally forced us toi changed to the following to avoid having one side deploy first and thus allow the other side a complete view of what he faces. Ā We have been using these rules:
"The arrival of elephants to our battlefields has now highlighted the inadequacy of the unit placement rules. Ā It is now too easy for the āattackerā to place his pikes opposite his enemyās elephants and his own elephants opposite his opponents cavalry. Ā Spear and Shield (and other) rulesets with standard unit sizes have more complex and better systems of initial placement. Ā I would like to suggest a better, yet still simple set of placement rules.
1. There are four separate sequential segments of unit placement.
2. In each segment each side rolls 2 dice and adds the number of cavalry and chariot (not elephant) units to their total. Ā The side with the lowest resultant total places first.
3.
First Segment: Heavy Infantry
Second Segment: Elephants and Light Infantry
Third Segment: Heavy and Medium Cavalry
Fourth Segment: Light Horse and Skirmishers
This would retain the advantage the side with more horse has, but allow the possibility that both sides might be able to place some elements of their army first. Ā It also stops the "attacker" knowing exactly where his opponent has placed, especially, his horse and elephants, and placing his own troops accordingly EVERY TIME."

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
Lorenzo, thank you very much for your kindness and congratulations on your great work.
I truly believe your games (Basic Impetus and Impetus) were a revolution in the wargaming world. Keep on the great work!!
On the other hand, Kenneth, you were so kind as to send me your suggestions via e-mail. They are very well thought and seem effective, though I haven't tried them yet. We'll have to wait for those changes announced by Lorenzo!

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
I'm new to wargaming and I've decided on:
WW2
I Ain't Been Shot Mum
Flames of War
Napoleonics
Et sans resultat
Ancient/Medieval
Basic Impetus and Impetus
So I'm also eagerly awaiting Basic Impetus 2nd edition
I'd like to ask Lorenzo a question if I may.
Is it ok to use the evasion rules from the full Impetus game in Basic Impetus? If I owned the full Impetus rules this wouldn't be an issue but I don't own them.
I guess I'm asking, is it legal to use them if you don't have the main Ā Impetus rules? I think they're are on this forum somewhere.
For my part, I intend buying the full rules if/when a 2nd edition comes out, unless something changes my mind by then
Thanks

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
Was just talking about this today with someone strangely enough. Although I don't play basic Impetus I'm sure you can incorporate the evasion rules into BI quiet easily.

I was more concerned with whether or not I should include the evasion rules because I don't have the main rule book.

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
@1ngram
Regardless of what Lorenzo decides there is always the old tried and tested fix. Since attacker and defender helps decide terrain and it's advantages I recommend for deployment for each player to write down their dispositions on paper and and once finished show each other and place your troops. Takes about 5 mins. Players of course will line their stuff up the best they can, but this will greatly reduce the problems you mentioned.

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
What Christopher suggests for Units placement makes sense. I will include in my draft (I'm just working in these days at BI2 fixing "on paper" all ideas collected so far)
Yes, evasion from Impetus can be adapted to BI.

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
In regards to S/CL evasion which I think needs to be included as currently they are too easily destroyed.
In full Impetus there are bounding moves which allow you to have a chance to catch evading units, however there is no chance or very, very little chance in BI perhaps giving to much of an advantage to evading units. I recommend units wishing to evade roll a d6 and on a 4+ can do so otherwise they cannot.
Another thing I noticed is skirmishers with VBU 2 and I 0 cannot harm other skirmishers unless I missed something. I think they should always be able to either throw one dice if they don't move vs only other skirmishers and always be able to charge other skirmishers as well. Otherwise you have a staring contest.

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
just an update on BI2. I'm concetrated on this set with the aim to release by June/July. It is coming a really interesting, fluid and balanced set.
I'm really enjoying making the playtest!
There will be many changes and this can be considered a kind of bridge towards Impetus 2.

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
some updates on BI2.
I think the rules are ok. Just some more tests focused on some troops just to tune things.
The lists are taking time, it is a big effort but I think it will be worth. I mean, I like the idea of a set completed with lists (with more to come as pdf if needed). I trying to make something like 300 lists. All are done and at this stage and I'm working on revision, to remove typos, uniform VDs etc.
I plan to have the finished file by July in order to start the layout and release the set by September.
It will be in several languages though not all versions will be released at the same time.
The first will be the English version, followed by Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. I plan to make also a French and German versions (but I'm open to any other versions if I find someone who helps me).
BI2 is planned to be the best intro game for the ancients/medieval period but not only an intro game. It is enough detailed to compete with many other sets.
Really satisfied on what is going on. That's a good exercise also for Impetus 2.

Re: Basic Impetus 2.0
Will the substantive difference between I2 and BI2 be
1. Larger armies (obviously!)
2. Multiple moves
3. Multiple commands and initiative/order of play
or will there be a significant difference in other ways?
The reason I ask is to decide if I should buy BI2 to lift some of the new/improved rules out into current full Impetus where possible, as a stop gap, until I2 comes out or if this simply won't work.
This would be for friendly club games only.

main differences will be
1) Command and control (Impetus 2 will have generals apart like Baroque)
2) Reaction
3) More details in many little things

Are there any changes in armies regarding bases? I'm planning some BI armies (Viking and samurai of some sort). Could I plan from the current lists, or will there be changes?
