/Possible New competition in Herts for later 2015?
Hi Guys,
Some of you may remember that I have been 'banging on' about the way the 'Principles of War' competition games were done?
It give balanced games, the chance to play with other armies you may never have done before, without having to invest in them. The only problem is that you have to have access to 2 historically matched armies. (See below).
The system was that each player brings his 2 matched armies. (I was thinking, say 250 -300 pt, single command armies to reduce sizes?). in round 1. each player rolls a dice and the winner selects which pair to play with. If it is his own pair then the opponent selects which side to play with. Selecting different, but balanced armies is a challenge in it's own right. If the winner selects his opponents pair he may also select which side.
After each round the scores are in a 'Swiss chess' list ... each player playing the closest person on the 'ladder' that they have not already done in this competition.
The person lower on the ladder checks the armies and selects which pair to play with. It can happen with interesting armies that even when a player can use their own ones that they select the other one.
This has always worked very well.
Scale? well actually we worked on the scale rules being set .... so table size, and terrain etc set for this competition I would say 25/28mm base sizes etc ..... but the figure scale can be anything. (Ok, 2mm figures can look very odd but as you supply both armies you can do them as you like.) Just be aware that movement rates etc are as for 25/28mm. I foresee mostly 25/28mm with a few 15mm pairs.
To get matched armies it is possible to borrow from mates and depending what you want for those travelling we might even be able to make the armies available from our own club sets.
As a different format and location I would suggest a one day, Saturday, 3 game format.
The Venue would be the Black Wolf club house in Hitchin. Details to follow if this is taken up. Various hotels are in the area, Luton Airport only 30 mins away so even Scottish and even Italian Friends might get there easily enough.
So please let me know what people think?

Re: /Possible New competition in Herts for later 2015?
Hi Colin,
Sorry to be slow replying but I'm travelling at the moment. I think this is a great idea. Matched armies usually make for better games; at least you don't start wondering how your army is going to survive (that just comes later). I fondly remember our Han Chinese civil war.
I'm not sure whether you need to reduce the points, or just allow a bit more time. When we had unfamiliar 300 point armies, in Cardiff in November, I think 1 3/4 hours wasn't long enough, and there were too many draws. 2 1/4 hours would have been enough, I think.
Best wishes

Colin great idea - definitely put me add my brother down as interested. No probs for us to have matched historical army pairs.
Any idea when in 2015 you were thinking of the competition?
Cheers Jez

Hi Guys,
As said in my comment of the Dragon Roar link, I will look further into the options for the 'Blackwolf Pairs' competition.
I will look at the options on Saturdays for a whole day competition.
I could work at our venue, we think we can do about 8 tables so will set the numbers for 16 players maximum.
I will chat with local hotels / guest houses to see what costs might be for people wanting to stay over 1 or 2 nights.
An important issue of course is the Rugby World cup matches which could be on at the same time!

Hi Col
Looks good I'm interested, my matched pair choice as you would expect will be Warband Civil War.
Cheers

Sounds good to me and I am sure you will get a car load coming down from Wales. You could also run it at Firestorm if that is easier. I would be quite happy to sort out the venue for you.
