Society of Ancients Battle Day
Sorry for the short notice.
Our group is attending this event in Newbury on Saturday the 1st April.
For details google society of ancients battle day. As the date has changed when you Google it it shows the wrong date just Google on 2023 which is just below the heading the correct info. then comes up.
The battle to be played by everyone using different rules is Matinee 362BC. The day starts with a talk by Duncan Head putting the battle into its historic context and highlighting controversial aspects.
The day ends with a de briefing by someone from each game how the game went within the context of the rules they used then a write up in slingshot of each of game went and how well each sent of rules worked for this scenario.
Anyone from forum welcome to join us.

Re: Society of Ancients Battle Day
Apologies just realised not given a follow up report on what turned out to be a really good battle.
Duncan Head kicked the day off with good talk on the battle of MANTINEA 362BC.
There were 15 games all fighting the same battle using 13 different rule sets.
To replicate the deep formation of the theban left we made 2 of there large units 3 deep instead of the usual 2. The 3rd unit didn't affect combat modifiers just there to sock up losses.
These theban made a bee line for the Spartan A class units they were facing. The weak theban right flank was refused.
True to form the theban commander Epaminondas was butchered on 1st contact.
The fighting was fierce all along the line. The theban right flank was caught and beaten but the theban centre overcame their opposition. The deeper thebans on the left flank just managed to overcome the Spartan A class. This would have won the battle but a reserve cavalry unit had managed to work its way round the theban left flank and take out a large unit with a flank attack to draw the battle.
At the end of the day our game was voted by the other gamers best of the day was very flattering.

The above picture from behind Theban lines. Can see deep theban units engaging A class spartans, the refused Theban right flank and heavy losses in the centre.
