New to the rules Empty New to the rules

Post by ffs6 Wed Jan 09, 2019 4:00 pm

Just got and am reading through Basic Impetvs 2.0. I'm confused about who can wheel and move or move and wheel. My reading of it says to me that infantry and cavalry can wheel and move yet, when reading 5.2.1 it looks like only chariots can perform a wheel and a movement in the same turn. So, what am I not getting?
I'll probably have more questions by the end of my reading, so bear with me.

Hi ya
My understanding of the rules are
All Units can wheel OR move (disordered or not)
Units that are NOT disordered may wheel and then move but will finish the movement in disorder.

Chariots must move straight forward at least 1H before wheeling. Like all other units they can only do this if they started the move NOT disordered. As disordered units cannot combine wheeling and moving.
Unlike other units, chariots will NOT be disorder after this combine wheel and movement.

pretty sure that's right

I'm not surprised you're confused. I reckon Rboy has it right, but the relevant sections appear contradictory and are hard to understand.

5.2 "A unit can move or wheel". This implies one or the other but not both. But the next sentence tells us units can wheel and then move.
And then the special section on war chariots tells us that chariots "are the only unit that can wheel and move". What the section appears to mean is that war chariots are the only unit that can wheel and move (or move and wheel) without becoming disordered. Frankly I reckon the whole war chariots special section (5.2.1) could be deleted without any loss to the rules.

I should add that I like the rules a lot. They are generally simple and have nice mechanisms. They just need a bit of tidying up.

I know its been a while since the OP and replies, but I don't think the answers are correct.

I believe a disordered unit can wheel, but cannot wheel and move

5.2, s1:  "A unit can move OR wheel". There is nothing to say a Disordered Unit cannot wheel
5.2, s2.  "If not in Disorder, the Unit can wheel and move  . . .the Unit will be disordered at the end of the move."

This allows a Unit to wheel (first) and then move becoming Disordered. However, IF it is Disordered at the start of the move it cannot move and wheel.

The implication of 5.2 s1 and s2 in combination is a Disordered Unit could move, or it can wheel, but cannot do both.

5.2.1 is about how war chariots wheel. They move at least 1H forward before commencing a wheel, unlike normal units that must wheel before any movement. I think this is a game mechanism so chariots cannot turn as sharply as cav, and not a move/wheel rule per se.

If a unit wheels and then moves, can it then contact an enemy unit. 5.2 states that you may not contact the enemy with a wheel. Am I reading that correctly in that it specifically applies to the act of wheeling (and only during the wheel itself), and not any move that takes place after the wheel?

Hi my understanding is that if your unit is not disordered you can wheel and then finish the movement forwards to contact the enemy ie charge but this wheel and move charge will disorder you automatically. The first sentence in 5.6 helps with this.

Cheers Jez
