Vapnartak York Feb 2018- format options?
Hi everyone
I was pondering the options for the York competition and wondered if I could canvass some opinions?
The two game format used at Derby was popular with players, however it did remove much of the competition element as there is really no way to get a real result over two games.
Getting away from the format it was also clear to me that the games where we had historical or near historical match ups were both prettier and more interesting to play.
That being the case, and accepting we only have 2 games in the day, I was wondering if we could split the competition into 4 player groups, each playing a specific period, so you would always get both games against semi historical opponents. This is a sort of half way house between the idea of one player providing matched opponent armies. It would take some more organising, and a little more planning so as to avoid matches against usual opponents, but I think it is "do able". What do people think?

hi Ken
sounds an excellent idea. i would be very keen to play historical opponents if possible. would it help if players nominated two armies to choose from to help give match ups? i would name romans and chinese and if three other players had roman opponents then my army would be the romans
might i also suggest the "italian" scoring system as it gives better and more wide ranging results, would help get a clear winner if only two games

Hi Frazer
I'm open to any suggestions - we tried the "Italian" system at Derby and Paul still won :-(

Hi Ken - I am hoping to come to York for the first time next year. Agree I prefer to play with more matched historical opponents so happy to fit in with any system for this. Can always have another competition for the "anything goes" open competition.
Cheers Jez

Hi guys,
I hope to be there regardless. Historical match-ups make sense if there are enough players. But if there are 10 or less it may not play out that well.

Depends on what we have as options - I would like Biblical, Classical, Rome and Medieval but that would require 16 players

hmmmm
alas it is all about getting players...
how about mix and match
classic, dark ages, medieval full fat boy impetus and a basic group??
how about using both 15mm and 28mm?
just thinking out the box,...or aimlessly rambling on??
