Lords & Servants play test and questions
Hello All,
I know I am late to the ball, but we tried a large format game of Lords and Servants this past Saturday. It was a 1000 pts per side. Vikings and Normans. There were two players per side. Overall, all players liked the ruleset.
It has some nice mechanics with the d6 system for combat compared to other rules. We really like the initiative system because it works well with multiple players in the large format. But we did have some questions with situations we encountered.
I read in the Smooth and Rifled forum that you can carry over unused Action Points. It took us a few turns before we figured it out, but now understand the idea.
Evasion
We had a situation where the unit of Viking Huscarls charged the Norman skirmishers. In the initiative phase the Vikings moved first and the Normans skirmishers second. The Normans rolled to evade and were successful. They ran away and the Vikings had no chance to catch them. But then the Norman took his skirmishers turn, and they moved back into range and fired at the Vikings who they just ran from. Is that supposed to happen? A unit evades and then can take their full turn? Do they count as having moved? This didn't feel right to us, but we couldn't find anything in the rules that said no.
Charging
We also had questions about charging. We had the Vikings charge a Normal spearmen unit. The first round of combat saw allot of the Vikings and Normans forced back 1 cm. So 2 cm between them opened up. When the Norman spearmen activated, they declared a charge and moved the 2 cm into contact, gaining a charge bonus. Can a unit declare a charge if they only move 1 - 2 cm? It doesn't seem they would have enough space to gain momentum. Again, there didn't seem to be anything that said no.
Shaken
We just wanted to confirm. Anytime a figure has been hit, but not killed, it becomes shaken.
As an example, a group has the following classification.
AV = 1/2/2 and assume it has an unshaken standard bearer in range.
When the unit activates again, the unit spends its first action point to remove the shaken status from all the shaken figures? Or does it cost one point for each shaken figure?
The figure or group can then spend the next two actions at the AV cost of 2 and 2 ?
One last item. I have created a nice black and white quick reference chart in English. If anyone is interested in getting a copy for free, send me a private message with your email and I will send it to you in pdf format.
I hope you can help me out with these questions.
Thanks.

Re: Lords & Servants play test and questions
Hi Rednoth
happy you a nd your friends liked the game.
As for your questions
1) Evasion. Yes they can do that. Of course it was not automatic: you need APs and to pass the test. By the way Huscarls are strong but slow.
2) Charging. Any distance is ok. The momentum stay in the "initiative". 1cm or 2cm away is an arbitrary distance to keep the game simple.
3) Shaken. The recover for shaken if for each individual figure, there us not a Group recovery. In the new version of Smooth&Rifled I amd working at yes and maybe it will be added in a future second edition of L&S.
That is you have to spend 1 AP for each figure you want to revover.
