Flank or Rear Attack
We had an interesting situation in one of our games recently that needs some assistance. A blue unit made up of FP Pike was charged on the flank/rear by the orange unit. In most cases determining flank or rear isn't important but for pike it is since pike do not suffer for flank attacks. You will notice that the orange unit is contacting the blue/pike at the corner of the rear and flank sides. Is this a flank attack or a rear attack?

Hello looks like you are in the happy situation you can make up your own house rule.Think I would judge rear or flank According to which is overlapped most if 50 50 then use mother of all rules dice for it. All the best eric

Re: Flank or Rear Attack
Mother of all rules works well for one game but I think overall most players would like to know what is the proper ruling. I agree that frontage of the attack might be a good way of determining flank or rear. Still what happens if the attacking unit hits the corner right at the middle of the unit?

Re: Flank or Rear Attack
The mother of all rules i meant only to be used in the circumstance you mention so hardly ever. Could make a rule that if you cant determine which you overllap most on a roll of 4 plus nudge the unit a little so that it overlaps rear most only undertaken if attacked unit is pike. Reards eric

Re: Flank or Rear Attack
I add an extra criteria whren the rear corner is contacted. If the attacking Units starts totally behind the prosecution of the back side of the target Unit, then it is a rear attack.

Re: Flank or Rear Attack
That was my first thought but could lead to situations where the overlap on the rear is only10% and on flank 90% but classed as a rear attack where in reality 90% of attackers hitting the flank. Thought in this instance it was more relevant to base judgement at point of contact bearing in mind it already qualified as a flank/rear attack being totally behind the projected front line of defending unit. Just my thoughts regards eric

Re: Flank or Rear Attack
Actually I like the idea that as long as the unit begins its charge move behind the extension of the back edge of the stand it counts as a rear charge (presuming of course that the charging unit doesn't somehow cross the front edge of the defending unit.)

Re: Flank or Rear Attack
In determining whether it is a flank or rear attack its based on the position of the attacking unit before it moves. If attack follows multiple moves its based on position before it makes final move to contact.
