Leaving a ZOC and reaction

Had this happen in a game yesterday, did I get it right?

I had a unit of CL in the ZoC of an enemy unit of javelin armed FL. I moved sideways to leave the ZoC and my opponent asked if he could shoot as I was doing this as it should trigger a reaction. I said it was okay as my unit fully exited the ZoC so he couldn't react. Did I get this right - if you leave a ZoC in any way the enemy can't react?

By the way it didn't have any impact on the game, I still lost

Oblique or sideway movement in ZoC triggers a reaction…so yes he could have got a shot in.

This has been discussed at length on the previous Forum. If my recollection is correct then you handled it right GG.

If a unit enters an enemy ZOC by sideway or oblique movement it generates an immediate reaction fire. But if a unit begins its move in an enemy ZOC and can completely exit the ZOC by the end of its first move then there is no reaction fire.

I'm with Tarty on this one. I think a sideways, oblique or wheel always triggers a reaction, irrespective of where the unit ends up.

On that basis, the only way to get out of a ZOC without triggering a reaction is either to move straight ahead and completely leave the ZOC in that move, or move backwards. No faffing about in a ZOC. Note that in the first case, if the unit had moved into the ZOC in an earlier move on a path that will allow it to move straight ahead and clear the ZOC, then the move into the ZOC triggers a reaction, even thought the move out doesn't.

The situation I'm not sure about is when a unit 'clips' a ZOC as part of its move, both entering and leaving the ZOC in the same movement phase. I think there is no reaction, applying the 'A Unit may not react' wording of rule 4.2, but it is possible that wording only applies when the move starts in the ZOC.

Upon reflection I think your right RogerC (and Mr. Tarty as well.) An oblique or sideways move always triggers a reaction response. A unit that moves directly forward and exits the ZOC in one bound without contacting the enemy is probably what I am confusing oblique move with.

Thanks for the replies, yes I got confused (again) so its time to make some notes. I remember the discussion on the old forum but drew the wrong conclusion that exiting overrides the way you do it.

The saving grace GG is that you still lost the game. Better to lose on a game with a wrong ruling than win.

You can thank Lorenzo for clearing that one up a little way back.

Another one that's interesting and slightly related ( using your example above )…. is that if the CL while in the FLs ZoC chose to fire at someone else other than the FL it would trigger a reaction from the FLs.
This was one I often missed as well…

anyway if you move and exit in the same movement you are following a direction that doesn't allow you to contact the enemy, so it triggers the reaction.

You can leave the ZOC without a reaction with one move forward or backward. You should end totally out of the ZOC. This is just to leave a Unit a minimum of manouvre to leave the ZOC. But the good thing to do is to enter the ZOC just to charge or to approaching
