New player help needed

Just wondering if anyone can talk me through the combat phase. I think it goes like this...

A unit of Hastatii clashes with a unit of CM (Italians) with a VBU of 4

The Hastatii add two dice for an impetus bonus and roll 8 dice. They score 3 hits

The Italians become disordered and have to take a test. Their VBU is 4 so thats a 1 to pass. but a 1 is a automatic fail so does that mean they are routed?

Not quite I'm afraid.

The disorder is not applied before the Cohesion Test (CT).

The CM have to roll 4 minus 3 or 1 on the CT but a 1 is an auto PASS in any case

As such they take no losses on a roll of 1. They stay in combat but are disordered because they took hits (not losses).

If they had rolled a 3 on the CT that would be 2 more than the required 1 so they would take 2 losses to their VBU and be forced to retest disordered as they list the melee (took more losses than they enemy).

Had they rolled a 6 (an auto FAIL) that would be 5 more than 1 so they would lose all their VBU and be destroyed (removed).

Yep bang on the money Roundie infantry lose their impetus agains't mounted....you'll be a veteran at this in no time Think Zippee was just describing the process more than anything

Bang on correct, as I'm on holiday basking by a pool I just walked through the general process - I don't have the rules so wanted to avoid particular details such as bonuses and modifiers just in case I made a silly error.
