Would people rather go for quality (VBU: 4, Discipline: B) or quantity (VBU: 3, Discipline: C) for Indian archers? After some contemplation I thought that better discipline and VBU 4 would be better bet against Macedonians, but now I started to doubt it because the cost difference is quite hefty (essentially have three with price of two).

The best value in Impetus is the shift from VBU 3 to 4. For only 2 extra points the troops get a huge lift in ability. But as you say in the Indian list the VBU4 troops also have better discipline making the differential greater. But overall I'd go with the better troops in this case. VBU 4 T troops with Longbow B can extend their effect into long range making it possible to disrupt infantry.

hello,
of experience when I'm playing Indian, I prefer to take the archers with VBU 4 and discipline B because it makes them more efficient in shooting distance. and close they are very dangerous and a descipline B will be more mobile.

Thanks for your responses. I had similar reasoning so my army - whenever I have sufficient time to paint it up, will be mainly elephants, better archers few swordmen and some rather lousy medium cavalry.

The Elephants are powerful but it also makes the Indian army brittle with them having VD3. You only need to lose a few and the battle is over.

Very true.
I've seen the cheaper VBU3 Ts used as screeners for the elephants ..... quiet effective and pretty good bang for your buck really when used like that.

Indian armies do seem to have had a lot of rubbish infantry.
Porus left his with a few elephants guarding the river when the rest of the army turned to face Alexander. So I think it's perfectly reasonable to have both VBU 4 and VBU 3 archers in the same army
