Unattached commanders for Impetus 2
Hi Lorenzo
I think there could be some improvements for unattached commanders in Impetus 2. Currently, I would never take an unattached commander. But in principle I think the benefits between unattached and attached commanders should give players pause on which one to take. I am specifically thinking about the commander in chief.
Here are a few suggestions.
Genius generals should always be unattached which means they can only be used with armies with good command. I think the benefit of giving subordinates a +1 on the initiative should be moved from Charismatic generals to Genius generals. It seems to me that one of the benefits of the being unattached is the ability to keep the overall battlefield perspective at play.
I also think that unattached commanders should be placed on the battlefield obviously unattached to any unit and allowed to move about. If they are overrun they simply displace (with perhaps a small chance of being removed?)
Beyond that I can't think of anything particular to improve the abilities of unattached generals. But I'd like to be able to better represent commanders like Scipio, Hannibal, Caesar and Belisarius who tended to command from the back and not the front.

I must admit I don't think any of us at our club have ever used an unattached commander. I wonder if in the 15mm game they're too far away to be any use?

Always use an attached general myself in 15mm. Only seen unattached general used a couple of times. Just wonder if having an unattached CiC could be represented on the table and allowed to run around and influence subordinate commanders. For example, have attached Commanders but have an unattached CiC that can move about and influence Sub Commanders and if he is caught he would suffer the consequences.

Got to say I like the idea of having the option of having unattached commanders, influencing the battle rather than leading from the front in a unit.
Re: Unattached commanders for Impetus 2
Only benefit I can see to having unattached leaders is that they cannot die and rout a command.
Compared to the benefits of being attached that is nothing, pay 10 points to get two dice of destiny...
