Opp charge/ Opp fire / Reaction fire / Defensive Fire ?
Hi All,
Not sure if this topic hasn’t been covered before ?
In V2 of the Impetus rules I find the Reactions above ( in the title ) by the inactive player very difficult to understand.
Opp charge as I understand it is a ZOC possible reaction. ( 5.7.3 ) and Defensive Fire ( 6.7 ) is a reaction to being charged .
However Opp fire seems to be another name for Reaction fire ? ( 6.5 ) if shot at .
I am confused by the example 3 on p34 where a CP1 unit does a potential charge on an S Javelinmen unit and it states that the S unit can either evade or “stand “and use Opp Fire ? Shouldn’t this be Defensive Fire .
Page 22 “ Possible Reactions “ places Opp fire in ( 6.5 ) Reaction Fire ?
I thought that Reaction Fire was only to do with return fire to being shot at , not as a reaction to being charged.
As you can see I am really confused by this and would be very grateful if superior minds to mine on the forum could explain the different forms of reaction possible !
Really like all the different reactions the inactive player can perform in Impetus but find the rules difficult at times !.

Re: Opp charge/ Opp fire / Reaction fire / Defensive Fire ?
It was a bit confusing for me as well. Here is my take:
Opportunity fire by a unit (also known as Reaction Fire) (Rule 6.5) is fire in response to enemy fire.
Defensive fire by a unit (Rule 6.7) is fire in response to an enemy charge.
I think you are reading Page 22 incorrectly. The chart indicates that opportunity fire (also called reaction fire) can be used as a response to enemy fire. It also states that a charge can be used as a response to enemy fire, but only if the shooting is done within the charger's ZOC.
You are correct about the example on page 34 using the wrong term. I never noticed the mistake.

Re: Opp charge/ Opp fire / Reaction fire / Defensive Fire ?
Hi kenntak,
Many thanks for your reply.
Thanks for confirming that Opportunity fire and Reaction fire are the same.
I presume that if the inactive players unit which is being fired at by the active player passes it’s DT for return fire then this is an exchange of fire, but still comes under the heading of reaction fire !
Sorry for being a pain but I just wanted to be clear about this .

You are not being a pain at all. I went through the same thing you did.
