1st Games with Impetus 2 Empty 1st Games with Impetus 2

We had our first games of Impetus 2 tonight. My first thought is that Impetus 2 is a very different game. Basic rules mechanisms are similar but the feel of the game is very different. There are a lot more reaction choices to make for one. Also, the shooting is very different in Impetus 2. More effective at longer range but far less effective at close range. With the shorter firing ranges and the faster movement shooting seems a bit reduced compared to Impetus 1. I think the Normans and other impact armies are going to be improved and the CM shooting armies (Seljuks, Mameluks and such) less effective. Too early to really tell. Heavy Infantry seems stronger in Impetus 2.

I am not sure about the 1/3 VD loss for commands routing. Even with the added VD for the generals this number seems low to me. We may use the alternate system but again too early to tell.

There are lot of little improvements in the system but because Impetus 2 is really a new game the cleaning up of the rules (which was what some of us were hoping for) is still incomplete. There are so many little changes that one needs to get used to (for instance groups being able to move and shoot, CL/CM not automatically bouncing out of melee with foot units, fragmented commands, frenzy test.)

Look forward to hearing how others are fairing with Impetus.

The rules are more like Baroque now - but you should give em a chance and play a few times before you change anything...................

We finally had our first game.

In general our impression is the same as Gaius's. The game flows well but there are lots of small changes that will take time to get used to. And of course there are the big changes in reactions and in command.
It certainly plays differently.

For now, we keep some reserves about the number of terrain pieces, the (smallish) command radius and the 33% breakpoint.

Nevertheless a thumbs up! Besides it's only the very first game.

Yep the 1/3 break point for commands can make things brutal...this has been talked about a lot here.

Definitely something put in place for competitions I think, certainly brings things to a head quickly that's for sure. I'm guessing club games and friendlies we'll be using the 1/2 option.

Next club meeting will be all about the new rules by the sounds of it, should be interesting.
