Large units of pikes - additions
We had a new guy join our campaign last night and inthe middle of the battle he asked what the rules meant when it said "Large units of pikes get a 3 dice bonus against mounted troops and a 1 dice bonus against infantry for each unit of depth . . . "
We have always taken "for each unit of depth" to mean that for the rear second unit of the large unit (and if allowed a third) you get the addition. So pike unit value 4 would get +3 = 7 in combat against mounted troops
He asked why this didnt mean a plus 3 for EACH unit of the large unit. If there are two normal units in the large unit they would get a +3 for each of them so a pike unit value 4 would be +3 +3 = 10.
Have we been doing it wrong all these years?

Re: Large units of pikes - additions
From memory there's a Lorenzo ruling that it is second and third base only that gives the bonus so you've been doing it right.

I agree with GG. The bonus only applies to the rear units, not the front unit. So a large pike unit of three stands gets a +6 bonus of dice against mounted.
