Inca, Chanca & Mapuche lists

This is the last batch of lists, this time for the "inca" zone.

The mapuche warriors with their mix of bows and melee weapons gave me some trouble on how to classify them. They could be perhaps FL's with Various weapons or just FL with a VBU 1 higher than in the list. Making them a more aggressive type of T than usual seemed to me a more interesting option.

As soon as I have some free time I will give a check and then put in the betas.

It's the sling with T infantry that worries me. As a missile weapon it's better than javelin which means that they have access to pretty devastating missile fire. At 14, that's 4 dice for infantry, 5 dice if you're shooting at cavalry. At that range they're as effective as Longbow B or Shortbow A

I agree that the Inca ought to have a lot of slingers,but I'd suggest they were skirmishers.
The 'heavy infantry' of an Inca army did have short spear, club and sling, but I'm not sure that it was used by formed units in pitched battles.
After all a proportion of Roman heavy infantry were trained with the sling, but still just fought as legionaries.
My suspicion is that the sling would be used in garrison duty, or on patrol, or units might go into skirmish formation to use their slings

I'd perhaps suggest your bog standard infantry were

10 - 24 FL infantry, 4 1 B 1 Various Weapons


What you might give them is various weapons, which would represent a handful of men from the ranks being sent forward a few yards to use the sling,

then you'd have
Replace a minimum of a quarter and a maximum of a half of these Infantry with slingers

Slingers 8 2 0 B 1 sling

I had doubts not only on the mapuche but also on the incas and the chanca...

The three options I considered were T with sling, FL with various weapons and FL with higher (perhaps) VBU and discarding any shooting effect.

The one I liked less was the "various weapons" option.
I chose the first and kept the VBU of those T slingers at 4 or 3 to avoid excessive firepower. However, allowing the use of slings in a relatively compact formation may not have been the best option.

I don't think that replacing the sling with various weapons will change much. It will lose 1 die against cavalry and still stay better than the javelin.

On my opinion it has a longer range than it should (the same with the javelin) and its factors are too high. On average compared with bows, it has a similar effect against infantry and 1 die less against cavalry.


Innstead and using bits of your suggestion I would go for something different:

removal of:

This becomes a sort of "small" large unit. The now much reduced firepower will stay within the main unit and the combined VBU of 6 doesn't makes them too strong.

Might also use this logic with the Chanca and mapuche.
