Cost/effectiveness of FP with long spear vs CP
We played our first game of Impetus 2 in the "Year 1000" period. The consensus was that the pendulum has swung very hard in favour of FP vs CP. There were three factors which all combined seemed to be too much but individually are all reasonable in theri won way.
1.The combination of long spear always denying impetus even when the unit is disordered or exhausted
2. the extra "-1 CP in melee vs FP" modifier in the cohesion test
3. the extra +1 in the cohestion test for successfully closing ranks
The issue is not so much these rules but how cheap FP with long spear are in these lists.
Interested in thoughts and opinions on this before we move on to Italian wars which is another period with a lot of heavy cav and pike.

Sounds right to me. In most rules sets in it suicidal or just plain not allowed for cavalry to frontally charge spears or pikes.

But the long spear bonus is retained when charged in the flank or rear, or disordered.

Yes, it does seem that Impetus 2 has shifted the balance between infantry and cavalry towards infantry in a big way. FP have especially been made stronger in the new system. Cavalry, especially CM, have been demoted. Also, missile fire is not nearly as effective as compared to Impetus. Too for early for us to tell how this is all going shake out. I do think VBU6 CM with Composite Bow C seems more realistic than before. I tended to avoid melee as much as possible with these units but with the new ratings they will need to melee at times in order to prevail. I think we need to play a least 100 games as a group before we can get a feel for the new system. Perhaps even 200 games is needed. So far we are at 11.
