Early AngloSaxon PBW

Hi
Just looking over the Early Saxon list , as am considering doing an Arthurian pair of armies & I noticed that the better saxon foot have a PBW.
Is this representing heavy throwing spears etc or wardogs ?
I am hoping the latter , as I plan on using BI unit bases rather than DBX bases, so it would be cool to work the dogs into mini diorama bases.

I think they can represent both. I mean, I was considering mostly the throwing of short spears, but why not, also the wardogs.
