Pursuit question

The last sentence in 7.7.4 Pursuit-reads " The player must decide to pursuit (pursue?) before the opponent rolls on the table".  

I've always made the call to pursue (or not) after my opponent has rolled on the retreat table and moved but, before I roll on the pursuit table. So basically I know how far he has retreated but I'm not sure if I'll catch him or not.

The last sentence in 7.7.4 makes me wonder if the call to pursue should be made before my opponent rolls on the retreat table? So I would not know how far he retreats or how far I would pursue.

which way is correct can anyone help?

I would say it is absolutely clear that you must make the decision to pursue or not before any rolls are made for distance

While the card for extra movement on pursuit can be used after the roll.
