What does "defending" mean with regards to hills?
A foot unit that is defending a hill gets a +1 on their Cohesion Test. What constitutes "defending"? This term is not defined in the rules. We couldn't agree in a recent game what defending means.

Interesting question, not noticed the ambiguity before. I would say it was +1 for the unit uphill, whether active or inactive phase. Alternatively it might only refer to the inactive player...

You described the two different points of view perfectly Aurelius.

We use the +1 always if uphill. But Aurelius has a point...

The higher opponent getting the +1 bonus comes from Impetus 1 and may be correct in Impetus 2. The question is what "defending" means.

is uphill the term to indicate that you have still to go further before reaching the crest? And downhill the contrary?
If so the advantage is for the Unit with the front directed downhill, so towards the plain, not towards the top of the hill.

Re: What does "defending" mean with regards to hills?
it means that you have a better position on the hill.
It is not related to the fact that you charge or not.
Simply you a Unit in on a hill it means that wants to get advantage from that position.
If in melee it is because an enemy Unit is trying to disloge it. Who charge the opponent first doesn't matter.
I found the text where it explains it. Par 3.3 (page 17, second column on top)

Thanks for the explanation. 3.3 doesn't use the term "defending."
