2nd Wales Classic August 2nd 2014 Details
Hi all,
I can now post details for the tournament at Firestorm Games, 8a Trade St., Cardiff, CF10 5DT and also start a list of entrants so far:
Colin Brewer - Western Han Chinese
Tony Dennis - Sargonid Assyrian
Peter Dennis - Thracian
Philip Watts - Ionian Greek
Mark Emms (reserve) - Early Sumerian

Ross Broadstock - Philistine
Gary Chapman - New Kingdom Egyptian
Gareth Thomas - Kushite Egyptian

It will be a fun and friendly occasion using 25/28mm figures organised into 300pt armies. The theme is 500BC and earlier so some real Ancient gaming! Some far Eastern armies have been included that fit into the spirit of the era to lend an exotic touch and encourage more unusual entrants. Full lists are below. Please note to ensure the major armies and troop types of the period are used Light Cavalry (CL) will be limited to 2 units max.
The latest version of tournament rules and amendments and clarifications will be used:

Won't be competing, but I would love to come along and whatch some games. I am sure it will speed up my understanding of the rules and tactics (nedded as I am a relatively new Impetus player).

Hi pw,
Don't let lack of play hold you back from entering if you want, we're a very friendly bunch (even though its a tournament!) and have had people compete with very little experience before. Do you live far away from Cardiff? If not you could meet us for some practice games beforehand, or as organiser I'd be happy on the day to 'fix' the draw so I could give you an intro first game - it should take about 5 minutes to teach you all I know Also the armies for this period are pretty straightforwards and have few types to get the hang of which will make things easier. Anyway either way it would be good to see you and as organiser if there's an odd number I won't be playing, so we could still get in some practice for you and let the others get on with it.
Cheers

Re: 2nd Wales Classic August 2nd 2014 Details
I live over in North Somerset so a test game is not really feasible, which is a shame. I shall be looking for local opponents once I have a bit more play practise with the rules. Most clubs seem to prefer the FOG/DBMX options, both of which I have played, and I much prefer Impetus. If I know thw rules well I am hoping that I can alsways persuade people to change!
I game with 15mm so certainly cannot compete with an army of my own. Thank you for the offer of providing one for me. I need to look into the logistics of getting across and what other commitments I have before committing to actually compete, so if others can give you a more positive response please don't keep anything back for me (yet!).
I know the venue is Firestorm Games, but what time do things start and what is estimated finish time. If you could let me know I can see if I can make the whole day.
I will in any event pop along to see what is going on and have a chat with a few people.
I have in the past played at DBM competitions and while I was never any good I did enjoy them.
Thanks for the response
Phil

Hi Phil,
Although I play my Impetus games with grenadiergrandson and others near Cardiff, I live in North Somerset. So if you want a local practice game or two, you may want to get in touch. I've several 28mm armies if you want to test that format. The games are a bit different from 15mm.
I'm not sure how the personal messaging system works on this forum, but by all means email me. It's a funny address but please use:
janetatcalderbankzerozerodotfsnetdotcodotuk
and replace the appropriate letters with symbols and numbers.
Best wishes

Hooray - finally worked out the new forum. Thanks Mark for the link.
Count me in.
I dont have any really "old" armies so will probably be some sort of Greek state.
I think we all need to start spreading the word about the new forum and sending out links for people to sign up. Had me baffled!

Hi Team Cardiff,
Just planning / choosing my list, would like to clarify options...
I assume that we include any notes in the lists as binding? e.g. the Theban Sacred Band would be illegal as the notes say they were raised in 378 BC.
Do we include Athens List 2? In other words does 500 BC count as Fifth century or late sixth?
Tony

Hi Tony,
500BC is just a convenient cut off point really so it can be used to include / exclude armies at the whim of the dodgy organiser
For Athens as they have 2 entries the first is to be used as that goes to the 5th C, the second starts at the 5th C so is not being used.
And yes options like the Sacred Band that are later than 500BC are not included.
On the other hand though it does mean that armies like Classical Indian can be used as they start 500 BC and have no other earlier entry - being around for 12 months until 499BC means they qualify
As its the first time we've tried a time limit like this I hope you can bear with us, it should make some kind of sense I hope!
Cheers

Just to confirm here that I'm going to take part, but you already know that, Grenadiergrandson. We can see if the Asian hordes are unstoppable 9again).
i think that several of the tournament regulars haven't yet found their way to the new forum. I'm not sure what we can do about that, except spread the word.

As GG has very kindly offered me the use of his Ionian's I'm looking forward to taking part in the competition.
I have had a few years gap in my wargaming which used to be 15mm DBM, so I have plenty of 15mm, but only a small Byzantine army in 28mm, hence the lone of the Ionian's.
The list looks great and I hope that I can give some of you a reasonable game despite my relative inexperience with the rules.

We have another entrant! Peter Dennis will be joining us. I notice that makes for an odd number, any more likely players?

That's good news Tony, Peter's name will be going on the list now. Is he okay for an army? I'm getting a list of spares together if needed. Stephen Dover is also in so that's 12 now , a decent number but hopefully there will be more!
In the event of an odd number I'll revert to full time hanging around / nuisance mode and if anyone wants to make a late change to Sumerians I'll bring them along just in case.
Cheers
