what's the point of a cell phone? I spend most of my time with no mobile reception. I do have an old nokia which lives switched off in a drawer until the odd time I take it out of the drawer when I'm going somewhere

Re: Modern Times...
There are still places without reception? Wow
I live in the deepest countryside and even here we have LTU, 4G and highspeed wireless interweb... And I always thought our country lives still 50 years in the past... Feeling high tech now

Re: Modern Times...
We're barely two miles as the crow flies from the town centre as well!
Some of it is the house, it's 400+ years old, rambling, heavy stone walls and so you don't get reception.
Some of it is that when they built this farm they put it on a good site, tucked in behind a hill, which of course means it keeps off the worst of the weather, and blocks mobile reception.
The other thing is that whilst when I'm working I will work in areas where there is reception, using the phone would mean having to carry my reading glasses with me, and frankly the chances of a phone, reading glasses, knife and keys surviving well in the same pockets are not good.
Not only that, but when I'm working, I'm working, so I don't want to be interrupted.

Evidently we don't live in a sci-fi world yet.

Re: Modern Times...
Well I live in an old farm too and while not 400 years old but "only" from the 19th century I have the same problem with 70cm stonewalls but htere is an easy solution - I put the phone and router on a window ledge where it can connect to the network
Doesn't help of course if the terrain blocks the radiowaves
@Gamespoet that's what I thought for a long time too but this spring I attended a convention in Salzburg where I had never been before, except once in my childhood. My friend and I were strolling around in downtown the evening before to have a look at the historic sites and wanted to get some dinner too. As Salzburg is a touristic attraction this can get quite pricey^^. So we took out our phones - speechrecognition on and just said "Resonable priced dinner in Salzburg" - and moments later google spit out a list of restaurants and customer reviews and we choose one that looked good to us. Again speechrecognition and told the phone the adress and google maps started and guided us to the location.
I remember how it was like to find a restaurant in a unknown city 20 years ago. First you had to ask 5 people, what restaurant they'd recommend and got 10 suggestions and when you had made up your mind you had to ask 3 people for directions and got 5 different answers^^
So in comparison to my youth I's say we life in sorta SF environment meanwhile

Modern Times...
In the good ole days there were travel books.
I can't access google on my phone, and it's only 5 years old!
By the time I'm an old man, imagine where things will be.
(GP ... who ya foolin' with "by the time"?)
Now, now, Mr. Conscience, I'm only middle aged. ; )

Re: Modern Times...
Yeah but travelbooks usually guided you to the kind of "tourist friendly" restaurants we wanted to avoid
I've been in Venice quite a few times and I can assure you there is a big diffference between a pizzeria on the lanes where the touristic onslaught is going on and a trattoria a few narrow streets away...

Re: Modern Times...
Well then the travel books were good for something.
They could tell ya which one's to avoid. ; )
As for Venice and pizzeria joints, sounds like ya got that one figured out as well, go to the one's on the streets where the tourists aren't. ; )
Maybe I'm not missing much with my 5 year old phone after all ... lol.

I worked that one out thirty years ago in Torremolinos when we were travelling through on cycles
The further from the beach the cheaper the beer and the better the food

Re: Modern Times...
Well in Salzburg I did that with my 5 year old iPhone 3 and if it had resisted the laws of gravity this summer I'd still have it - well Newton: one - phone: love
But in earnest I am really in love with GPS navigation as I often drive in unknown regions deep in the night when there isn't even someone awake you could ask for directions let alone on the street. And the virtual map is a lot (really - trust me) more convenient than the good old paper maps.
Also when driving in the city of Vienna (which I really really do hate) it tells me which lane of the street to use when it comes to a crossing etc. Driving in the city now is much more relaxed
I'm not a fan of using technical progress just because it's there but when it makes sense I use it.

Only have a mobile for work related incoming calls anyway there's nothing important enough to warrant carrying the damn things around all the time that can't wait ...nuisance.
