Pilums & PBW's

Have I got these rules right?

example
A Unit of (FP)spear-men frontally charges a unit of Legionaries.
It's the 1st contact of the game for the legionaries and as they are not disordered they throw 4D6 pilum dice before the melee.
Question:
Is that classed as their charge reaction or after throw the pilums can they close ranks as their reaction?

Melee modifiers:
Legionaries: 6D6 VBU + 1D6 (pilum in 1st combat round) +1D6 for closed ranks equals 8D6 combat dice?
Spear-men 5D6 VBU + 2D6 Impetus bonus equals 7D6 combat dice.

I'll be interested in the official answer. My interpretation was different

1st charge against Romans they get 4d6 pilum then fight without pilum bonus.

Subsequent charges - Romans get no pilum but get +1 melee in first round (due to few residual pilum)

You can only close ranks against Mounted. I don't think it has any effect against infantry.

The +1 is for Closed Ranks is for the Cohesion Test.

It says in 5.9 that units can use PBWs and Close Ranks. I agree with Nick about the calculations.
