Army building question - what "+" means

I'm building an Early Persian army and some entries have large units with an X type front rank + Y type rear rank.

Taking the Immortals - they are 0-4 of the front rank + rear rank. Does this mean 4 bases in total (i.e. 2 front type and 2 rear type) or 4 large units (i.e. 8 bases)?

Yes 4 Large units so 8 stands in total.

Sorry Nick (and Tarty) but the 0-4 + means 4 bases in total and 2 large units, not 4 large units. Look at the Fatimid Lists in EI2 on page 33 for the template example (the Abid al-Shira foot). You will see in the earlier list that the combined total for both units is 4-12 but in the notes that recognition that they combined make only 6 large units.

Yes sorry Nick Gaius is right.....don't know where I was when I answered that my apologies. Also all these stands/units making up a 'Large Unit' in the EA Persian list are considered as T's now. Front stand keeps it's pavise.

Large Units entirely formed by shooters (T) must fire with
the front Unit and not with the rear unit. This means that
their shooting capability is not reduced until the rear Unit
